Sloth Sanctuary - Day 1

After breakfast we boarded a shuttle to take us on the 3.5 hour ride to the Sloth Sanctuary. But we didn't have to wait that long to see a sloth, as there was one hanging out upside down along the highway.

When we arrived we got settled in our rooms and were given a quick tour around the place. There are about a dozen volunteers here right now. Then it was lunch time - more rice and fried beans. Delicious. We got our orientation from Clare in the afternoon and then got to dive right into feeding time. Super cute watching them eat - not sure about their table manners though.... ;)

Our official work day ends at three, but a bunch of us stayed around to say hi. One of the particularly cuddly sloths is Sid. They may move slow, but when they want something, they work their hardest to get it. And they can really hold on. I think it took me almost five minutes to put Sid down and make it out of his enclosure without him catching back on.

We finished up the day with a nice, long walk to a nearby town, followed by dinner back at the Sanctuary with the other volunteers. And yes, more beans and rice :)

Well, I'm exhausted and Mike's already asleep. Yes, it's early, but our days start at 6 am. So, it's bedtime for me too. And it's a good thing we're exhausted too, since there are howler monkeys nearby.....

  3. Squeeeeeeeeeeee!!!!!
Are their noses really as moist as they look? Must be like being around a kid with a perpetually runny nose!

  4. on a scale of one to ten, how freaked out would you be if they suddenly started speaking English?

  6. Their fur is plush and slightly coarse. Still very cuddly and pet-able. Yep, the 2-fingered sloths usually have damp noses, but in their defense, it's super hot and humid here, so they are nothing out of the ordinary :)
